Nuclear effects experiments in the laboratory can study the response of reentry warheads to simulated X-ray effects in the atmosphere. Spray a layer of explosive on the surface of the structure and detonate with a strong flash that produces a pulsating load close to that of the load at the same time. This report describes the lateral pulse loading test of a full-size reentry warhead, demonstrating that the technology of photo-detonating explosives can be extended to load large structures, including discontinuous load distribution. This test requires the development of a diagnostic method to verify the impulse applied. It also requires the development of a large light source to detonate explosives along the entire surface of the warhead at the same time. The measured strain response is close to the computer predictions. According to the test of light detonating explosives, the structural performance and internal response of the warhead in X-ray environment are determined.
