Previous studies have shown that LWS and HWS differ more than 10-fold in weight, feed intake and glucose regulation at 56 days of age by more than 56 passages of selection. LWS is lean in body, partially anorexic, and HWS is a compulsive eater, which has different sensitivity thresholds for feeding and blood glucose to central and peripheral insulin. Insulin-induced hypoglycemia at 90 days of age was associated with a decrease in glucose transporter expression in the liver, and differences in expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and NPY receptor subtypes in the hypothalamus between LWS and HWS. To determine the effect of insulin-induced hypoglycemia on hypothalamus and liver gene expression in two-line early-aged chickens, researchers at the Virginia Tech University (USA)
