中国人心中最著名的灵猴,莫过于集齐天大圣和佛教行者双重身份为一身的孙悟空。学者认为,孙悟空的形象是古印度史诗《罗摩衍那》中的英雄神猴哈奴曼与中国古代传说中的水神无支祁的结合。哈奴曼故事是印度神话中的精品。史诗热情称颂神猴的法力、慈悲和义勇。哈奴曼形象随佛教流传中国,为文人雅士所欣赏。而在一篇唐代小说中,大禹治水时在桐柏山遇到淮涡水神无支祁,“形若猿猴,缩鼻高额,青躯白首,金目雪牙”禹使神将镇之于淮阴龟山下。
