A new technique was developed to measure the surface temperature of a heated quartz structure without direct contact with the surface of the heated object. It is particularly useful to measure the temperature in this way if additional thermocouples or other temperature sensors can damage the surface of the material. As shown, a thermocouple is placed over the test piece with a black ceramic fiber cloth awning placed over the thermocouple. The heat source is a row of quartz lamps that heat the canopy. The canopy acts as a black body, converting radiated waves of shorter wavelengths from quartz lamps into longer-wavelength infrared radiation. Everything inside the canopy warms at almost the same temperature. The specimen radiates in a black body, and the canopy protects the object from being directly exposed to a heating lamp, causing differences in radiation heating due to different emissivities and absorptivities.
