VNIImetmash, the Soviet Union’s All-Russia Metallurgical Machinery Manufacturing Research Institute, developed a new horizontal continuous casting plant, the Gorizont unit (see Figure 1). The device allows two slabs to be simultaneously pulled out of the mold in two opposite directions; the tundish is placed on a water-cooled copper mold that vibrates in the horizontal direction.
