Richard Jefferies’ The Acorn-Gatherer depicts the miserable life of an illegitimate child and his whole family in a backward village. Through a Freudian tripartition of the human psyche combined with social analysis, this paper intends to explore the cause of the tragic life. Through the above analysis, this paper maintains that the life of the protagonist is an inevitable tragedy.
