Objective To study the effect of participatory pregnancy education on reducing cesarean section rate. Methods A total of 589 pregnant women with singleton primiparous birth and full-term prenatal care were enrolled in Lishui MCH hospital from 2013 to 2014. Among them, 291 pregnant women in the control group received passive pregnancy education while 298 in the experimental group adopted participatory pregnancy education. We compared the delivery outcomes and influencing factors of the two groups respectively. Results The rate of cesarean section in experimental group was 36.91%, which was significantly lower than that in control group (58.42%, P <0.05). There were 28 cesarean sections in the experimental group and 65 cesarean sections in the control group because of “psychological factors ”. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusion Participatory pregnancy education helps pregnant women to better understand the pregnancy and childbirth process and reduce the fear of childbirth. It plays a role in reducing cesarean section rate, especially social factors of cesarean section.
