自2000年,南京农业大学观赏园艺学科就与南京艺莲苑花卉有限公司建立了良好的合作关系。观赏园艺学科的荷花课题组自2013年开始专门致力于荷花育种和种质创新工作,与南京艺莲苑再度合作,两家单位联手开展荷花新品种的培育工作。目前主要采用亚洲莲与中美杂交莲杂交的方式选育荷花新品种。同时也开展了辐射诱变育种、转基因育种工作。
