  【Abstract】Language teaching is a basic part of teaching and teachers’attention paid to it has been increasing.Researchers focus on learners’autonomy have been increasing and that is exactly the major concern of this research.

  I.Introduction
  Since the beginning of 21th century,educators started to pay more attention to the role of learners in teaching and learning.Teachers realized that they should organize classroom activities in accordance with the learners’ present levels.The purpose of this paper is to analyze the functions of autonomy in foreign language learning.This paper is divided into five parts: the introduction,the autonomy in foreign language learning,the functions of autonomy,the enlightenment of on language teaching and the conclusion.
  II.Autonomy in Foreign Language Learning
  2.1 Definition of Autonomy in Foreign Language Learning.Learner autonomy is defined as the term that includes both the choices from which learners can choose and the restriction that limits learners’ choices.Linguists have not reached agreement on the dividing line between the freedom and the restriction but they all agree that the the freedom in learning activities are different from learner autonomy.
  2.2 Features of Autonomy in Foreign Language Learning
  2.2.1 Proportional Relationship with Ages of Language Learners.Learner autonomy is closely related with the age of language learners and the age is one of the determining factors to effect learning efficiency.Besides,learner autonomy has proportional relationship with ages of language learners.
  2.2.2 Proportional Relationship with the Efficiency of Learning Activity.Learner autonomy is proportional related with the efficiency of learning activities.The higher the learner autonomy is,the higher the learning activities efficiency is.
  2.2.3 Long-term Effects on the Language Learning Activities.The influence of motivation on the learning activities is a long-lasting one.This rule is applicable for adults since they are tougher than the youngsters.As for the youngsters,their impetus to learn comes is to achieve higher scores in the examinations.
  III.Functions of Learner Autonomy
  3.1 Raising the Interest of Language Learners.Raising the learners’ interest is extremely important in language learning because the efficiency of students’ learning can be improved after they become interested in learning and they will learn voluntarily after they become interested in language learning.   3.2 Improving the Motivation of Language Learners.Once a language learner is motivated to learn a language,their motivation can be improved further because the students’ need for improvement and their needs for their teachers’ praising will be satisfied after their motivation is enhanced.
  3.3 Stimulating Language Learners to Find More Learning Approaches.After a student become motivated to learn such a language,he will find out more tips to remember the vocabularies and the complex grammatical knowledge.High motivation can encourage them to find the following skills: to find out the tips to memorize the relevant to the words and to find more methods to master the complex grammatical rules.
  IV.The Enlightenment on Foreign Language Teaching
  4.1 Application of Multimedia in Enhancing Learners’ Autonomy.In order to enhance the students’ motivation,teachers should take measures: the design of the courseware should be relevant to the teaching content and teachers should consider students’ condition in teaching activities.
  4.2 Adding English Movies to Stimulate Learners’ Motivation.In order to enhance the students’ motivation to learn,teachers should add some film fragments when necessary,instead of distracting their attention.Besides,teachers should ask some questions before playing the movies,and the questions should be closely related with the teaching content.
  4.3 Organizing More Classroom Activities.The first classroom activity is the competition of speech in which the students are required to prepare for a speech about teaching content.The second type is the debate related with the teaching content and teachers should divide students into two groups and as students to complete different tasks.
  4.4 Making Use of Teacher Evaluation.The methods to use evaluation include: the teachers should reduce praising when they evaluate the students having been performing actively in class.and put all the teachers’ evaluation on their performance into profiles.
  V.Conclusion
  In this paper,the functions of learner autonomy and the enlightenment on English teaching are introduced and if all the language teachers should follow suggestions,Chinese students will never complain that English class is boring and useless.
