从八十年代中期起,许多学者就呼吁“重写文学史”,提出以“三新”(即思维新、观念新、方法新)型的文学史替换知识老化,观念陈旧,思想滞后的旧文学史,以突破我国文学史的研究与撰写。学者陈平原在《小说史·理论与实践》一文中令人信服地提出“学术推进的大致路向是:研究型文学中的某些精彩结论,逐渐为教科书所接纳,而后又逐渐为普及型文学史所推广,终于成为社会普遍认可的常识;而公众文化水准的提高,又无形中形成一种压力,逼迫专家学者进一步探索,寻求更加完美的文学诠释。”
