1. Detective Brown was reading a book at home at 9:00 in the evening. Suddenly the lights went out. 晚上九点，布朗探长正在家里看书，忽然停电了。
2. Five minutes later, there was a loud noise，which shattered all the windows. 五分钟之后，一声巨响把窗子的玻璃都震碎了。
3. A house nearby exploded and burned. Mr. Brown ran to the house at once. 原来是附近的一所房子爆炸着火了。布朗探长连忙向现场跑去。
4. An old woman lived in the house. She said to Detective Brown sadly:“Fortunately, I was shopping then, otherwise ...” There was a smell of gas on the scene. Detective said: “The explosion should be caused by the gas leakage.” “Really? My nose is not very keen, and I can’t smell the gas,” said the old woman. 房子里住着一位老妇人。她伤心地对布朗探长说：“幸好我当时在买东西，要不然……”现场可以闻到一股煤气的味道。探长说：“应该是您家里的煤气泄露引起的爆炸。” “真的吗？我的鼻子已经不灵了，我根本闻不到煤气的味道。”老妇人说。

8. By the inquiry, the police found out that the old woman’s nephew Roy was the suspect. The old woman had a lot of jewel and stock. She saved them in the bank and was insured. The beneficiary was Roy. 经过调查，警方认为老妇人的侄儿罗伊是犯罪嫌疑人。老妇人有许多宝石和股票都寄存在银行，并且投了保险，受益人就是罗伊。
9. But Roy was not on the scene when the explosion happened. There was proof proving that he was in the hotel 10km away from here. The Detective asked: “Did he go to the woman’s house that night?” “Yes. He finished his supper and left at half past eight o’clock.” 但是事发当时，罗伊不在案发现场，而且有证据表明他当时在离案发现场10公里以外的旅馆里。探长说：“那天晚上，他去了老妇人的家吗？”“是的。他吃完晚饭后，于八点半离开了。”
10. Detective Brown analyzed all the proof and thought about it. Then he said: “It was made by Roy.” 布朗探长分析了所有的证据，思虑良久说：“这起案件就是罗伊策划的。”

Key： 利用电话杀人放火。煤气爆炸时，住在旅馆的侄儿一定在打电话。他事先在被害者的电话上做些手脚，让电话线短路，然后打开煤气总开关，逃离现场。当房间充满煤气时，凶手从旅馆打电话来，这时电话机会有电流通过，电线短路爆出火花，随即点燃室内的煤气起火爆炸。电话用电和电力公司用电不同，所以即使电力公司停电，电话还是照常通电。
