记得九年前,女儿还在幼儿园大班,有人来推销《目击者丛书·自然博物馆》。那是我见过最完美的中文书,从内容到装帧,从文字到图片,几乎无可挑剔。为了女儿,也是为了我自己,我用自己的半个月的工资买下了其中的十本。惟一遗憾的是,该丛书是三联书店从国际著名的参考和科普读物出版商DK出版社引进的,而非中国学者和出版人的原创作品。我当时就想,什么时候,中国人自己也能编撰出可以与DK的图文出版物相媲美的原创图书。今天,当读到陈仲丹教授编著的姊妹书《图说兵器战争史:从刀矛到核弹》和《图说交通探险史:从牛车到飞船》时,我的确有一种无比的喜悦,因为它满足了我或许有些狭隘的民族自尊心:中国的学者和中国的出版社同样能够做出世界水准的图文读物来!
I remember that nine years ago, my daughter was still in kindergarten and was promoted to Eyewitness Series · Museum of Nature. That is the perfect Chinese book I have ever seen, from content to frame, from text to picture, almost impeccable. For my daughter, but also for myself, I bought one of them with my half-month’s salary. The only regrettable is that this series is the third-generation bookstore from the internationally renowned reference and popular science book publisher DK introduced, rather than the original works of Chinese scholars and publishers. At that time, I thought, at a time when Chinese themselves could compile original books that would rival DK’s graphic publications. Today, when I read the sister book “Illustrated History of Weapons and Weapons War: From Sword Spear to Nuclear Bombs” and “Illustrated History of Traffic Adventures: From Ox Chin to Space Ship”, edited by Professor Chen Zhongdan, I really enjoyed a great joy because it satisfied I may have some narrow national self-esteem: Chinese scholars and Chinese publishers are also able to make world-class graphic readings!
