The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between vocabulary specificity and vocabulary translatability. Translatability refers to both the translatability of vocabulary and semantics. This study used two independent scales to measure the level of specificity of 123 target English words and their Chinese translatability. The results show that there is a statistically significant correlation between vocabulary specificity and translatability, and the vocabulary specificity affects the meaning similarity between English and Chinese vocabularies. Specificity may be one of the factors that influence the translatability of English and Chinese in a word. However, this effect is mainly applied to the semantic level of translation transparency in both languages, not vocabulary. The specificity of the vocabulary and its related features can help establish the level of translatability between the two languages. This article also discusses the implications of the findings for L2 learning and teaching, especially the two aspects of translation effect and teachers’ code-switching behavior.
