In order to keep the closest pace with the rapid development of our modern society, the students’ ability to speak English has become most essential. So as the basic element, phonetic teaching is becoming very necessary in FLT.
This thesis intends to investigate the relationship between phonetic teaching and the whole English teaching process in the range of FLT.
1.Brief introduction to phonetic teaching
1.1 Usage and use as aspects of phonetics
FLT begins with each aspect when we begin to learn. And the main point is spoken English teaching. Because spoken English is relatively related to phonetics, English phonetic teaching has become extremely meaningful.
The purpose of English teaching is to improve the students’ four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. But this is not final purpose. The final purpose is to let the students be able to use the language, with phonetics as the basis.
1.2 Definition of phonetics
In the study of phonetic teaching, it is quite necessary to mention something related to phonetics.
English phonetics is the science of English speech-sounds. It deals with the sound system of the English language. It covers the description of the organic formation of English sounds, the investigation into the laws of their changes and the rules of their stresses, the explanation of the syllable construction, the study of the intonation patterns and the classification and system atization of all the stydied phenomena and their internal relations. (ZhouKao cheng, 2002:6)
Phonetically, speech sounds can be studied in three perspectives.
Articulatory phonetics: it studies the human speech organs and the way in which three speech sounds are produced.
Acoustic phonetics: it is acoustic phonetics. It studies the physical properties of the speech sounds, and deal with the sound waves through the use of such machines as a pectrograph.
Auditory phonetics: it is the study of the perception of sounds by the human ear.
The three branches of phonetics, of which articulatory phonetics is the most basic and practical branch to a student of language study. Especially for the students to study phonetics.
2. Problems in Phonetic Teaching
2.1 Teachers’ lack of awareness to teach phonetics
According to my investigations and observations, I found that some English teachers have not done very well in this area.
When the teachers teach English phonetic symbols, they just focus their attention on their rate of progress and get their students to be able to pronounce them, while, as for the correctness of their pronunciation.
2.2 Teachers’ own qualities and English proficiency
Although there are numbers of teachers with many years full teaching experience in practice, they may be poor in phonetic theory or certain principles. To some extent, we can say some teachers then have low qualities and lack of English phonetic teaching knowledge. Therefore, I think this kind of way to teach is very undesirable.
2.3 Other factors affecting phonetic teaching
Besides the problems which have been mentioned above, there are also some other factors which affect English phonetic teaching in practice, such as teaching material, the effect of mother tongue and class size, etc.
3.Ways to teach phonetics
3.1 Necessity for teachers to enlarge their teaching knowledge
Teachers play an important role in students’ language learning. A modern teacher should have a comprehensive quality both in English phonetic knowledge and phonetic teaching. The objective of phonetic teaching is not only to let students master the language expressions, but also to let them have good pronunciation and intonation, etc. all these require a teacher to have more knowledge in the language field.
3.2 Creating and maintaining a secure environment for learning
Teachers should provide a good atmosphere for language learning and using. Teachers always speaking English to students so that the students feel as if they were in an English-speaking environment.
3.3 Applying modern science and technology into phonetic teaching
As researches show, in phonetic learning, eyes and ears are the most efficient sensors; while the more sensors one uses, the higher efficient one gets. So if a teacher can make use of all kinds of modern equipment such as recorder, TV, CAI multi-media in teaching, it can help the teacher to create a better language environment and increase the opportunities of practicing English.
This paper has attempted to discuss the phonetic teaching. It is so far has been proved that the objective of phonetic teaching is to help students in middle school achieve speaking competence. The recent methodological and environment implications stress the need for students’ speaking ability. The thesis illustrate in this paper could be more effective.
In a word, phonetic teaching is a hard task. We need to gather the whole society to make great effect to improve it though we still have a long way to go.
