Sargent is a famous painter who was active in European and American painting circles at the end of the 19th century. He is known for his portraiture. Sargent consciously shifted his creative focus to the creation of watercolors, and it turns out he did achieve remarkable results. His watercolors are capable of precisely grasping light and color, producing a clear visual effect. The fluidity of water and the transparency of pigments are perfectly integrated in his paintbrush. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze Sargent’s portrayal of portraits from three aspects: composition, the blending of light and color, the influence of music on his painting, and his reproduction of nature.
