尼古拉斯·埃文斯的长篇小说《马语者》中充溢着极为浓郁的悲剧气氛,体现了作家强烈的生命悲剧意识,这种悲剧意识是通过文本中多重层面的悲剧来表现的,如身份悲剧、社会文化悲剧、家庭悲剧、爱情悲剧等等。并且,这种悲剧意识和当代的历史文化语境有着密不可分的关系,体现了作家对当代美国社会的思考。同时,在这部作品中,作家也对这些悲剧的救赎之道作出了探讨。
