In 2012, China’s grain output increased for the ninth year in a row with grain imports reaching record levels. As a result, many people raised concerns and worries about the security of China’s food supply. Discussions about the self-sufficiency rate of grain were ubiquitous. The Chinese government announced in the 1990s that it will work hard to maintain the self-sufficiency rate of food in China above 95%.
