制革方法中以鞣皮一步为最重要。国货工厂所采用之鞣皮方法有三种:一为烟熏鞣法,此法虽较陈旧,但有用之者;二为植物鞣料鞣皮法;三为铬盐鞣皮法。后二法为普通应用之方法。铬盐鞣皮,虽成本轻而出货速,但革之品质较植物鞣料所鞣者为逊。故今日之制革,植物鞣法仍占重要之地位。我国植物鞣料颇多,更宜提倡植物鞣皮。四川、贵州土产五倍子、(?)棡子等,产量甚丰,且都具鞣皮之良好性
