元末政局动荡,永嘉楠溪望族虽成立武装据守自保,因台州方国珍占据浙东,乃不得已服从方国珍之侄方明善的控制。当时江浙行省都事刘基因奏议捕杀方国珍,受到省院台官驳议,弃官归里,楠溪望族纷纷前来依附。刘基成为朱元璋幕僚后,劝说楠溪望族转而支持朱元璋的军队。朱元璋统一天下之后,遣送曾经臣属方国珍的楠溪望族首领到扬州管制居住。乡间文人创作一系列传说故事,广泛流传,曲折地反映元末楠溪望族首领成为末路英雄的历程。

After Liu Ji became a Zhu Yuanzhang aides, he persuaded the Nanxi clan to turn to support the emperor’s army. After Zhu Yuanzhang unified the world, he was sent to Yangzhou as the chief of the Nanxi ethnic group who had been the minister of Fang Guozhen. The rural literati created a series of legends that were widely circulated and flexibly reflected the course of the end of Nanhuan’s chieftain of the late Yuan Dynasty as the hero of the end.
