Overview Canada and the United States are the world’s mining powers. In Canada in particular, the population is only 24 million. In 1980, the total output value of mining industry reached 32.4 billion Canadian dollars, with a per capita value of about 1,100 U.S. dollars. The annual output of non-ferrous metals was 22 million tons, ranking the first in the world. North American mining is known for its large scale, advanced technology and high labor productivity. However, little is known about the continuing existence of small mines, particularly the individual mining industry. According to 1982 statistics, the average weekly wage of mining workers in Canada was 410 US dollars, ranking second in the nine major industries. The economic benefits of individual miners even exceed this level.
