This article is the speech by Professor John Unsworth, dean of Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in the “International Symposium on Library and Information Science Education in the Third Digital Times China and the United States.” In this article, Professor John Unsworth reviewed the development of digital librarians education and pointed out that the challenges of library and information education in the future mainly come from three aspects: one is how to maintain the independence of the Institute of Information and the other is to show the importance of information career; From the information profession itself - some people resist inevitable changes in practical work; third, informatics covers a wide range of areas, each of whom can only choose to specialize in some of these areas, making each information college unique. In response to the challenge, the School of Information should provide students with a comprehensive education and therefore employ relevant practitioners as part-time teachers to teach courses in areas of critical practice that have not yet been covered. Future librarians must have a broad range of knowledge of statistics and computational methods, natural language processing, corpus linguistics, digital humanities, and are prepared to provide people with knowledge about these and become qualified “librarians ”.
