任何一门科学分支的生命力均取决于该学科研究的自然现象的广度,尤其取决于吸引到该领域的科研工作者的人数和才能。在各种有意思的问题已经解决,或者经历一个衰变过程,那些能干的科研工作者把注意力转到别的方面,在这种时候,就会发生过时的问题。流体力学由于其主要科学研究课题来自技术的需要,所以直至最近仍在到处发挥着作用。流体力学作为科学的一门分支正在发生的危机是颇严重的。不过,近来有几方面的发展正在改变这种状况。为了看看这些影响,我查阅了《航空科学杂志》(Journal of the Aeronautical Science),》国家航空咨询委员会技术摘记》(NACA Technical Note),《应用物理杂志》(Journal of Applied Physics)这三种刊物,把十年前的情况作为标本,同1963年出版的《美国航空和宇航学会杂志》(AIAA Journal),《流体物理学》(Physics of Fluids),《流体力学杂志》(Journal of Fluid Mechanics)这三种杂志的目录作了比较。兴趣持久性表现最为突出的是转捩和湍流,也许这是物理科学中最大的未解决问题。此外还提示了流体力学的未来方向。
The vitality of any branch of science depends on the breadth of natural phenomena in the discipline, especially on the numbers and talents of researchers who are attracted to the field. After all kinds of interesting problems have been solved or undergo a process of decay, those capable scientists will turn their attention to other aspects, at which time outdated problems will occur. Fluid mechanics has been playing its role all the way up until recently, as its main scientific research topic came from the technical needs. The crisis that fluid mechanics is taking place as a branch of science is quite serious. However, recent developments in several areas are changing the situation. To see these effects, I looked at three of the Journal of the Aeronautical Science, the NACA Technical Note, and the Journal of Applied Physics The journal, which used the situation a decade earlier as a specimen, with the AIAA Journal, the Physics of Fluids, the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, published in 1963, The catalogs of the three magazines are compared. Perhaps the most outstanding unsolved problem in physics is perhaps the turn of events and turbulence that is most prominent in the persistence of interest. In addition it also suggests the future direction of fluid mechanics.
