无子西瓜是利用遗传上三倍体不孕性的特性进行栽培的。无子西瓜植株抗逆性强,生长旺盛,果实产量高(为同品种普通西瓜的1.3~1.5倍),含糖量高(比同品种普通西瓜含可溶性固体物高1度),品质优良(果肉密度较好),供应期长,瓤内无籽,食用方便,深受广大群众欢迎。无子西瓜以四倍体西瓜为母本,普通西瓜为父本,授粉后得三倍体西瓜种子而进行栽培。普通西瓜为二倍体,其体细胞的染色体数2X=22,配子(性细胞)的染色体数X=11。四倍体西瓜是通过人工诱变,使普通西瓜的染色体数加倍而获得。
