Background Description: In October 2002, the Commercial Press published the American Freedom Story by Eric Foner, former Chair of the American Historical Society and Professor De Witt Clinton, Department of History, Columbia University The Story of American Freedom) Chinese version. At the end of November, Mr. Wang Mingyi, the editor in charge of the book, suggested that I, as a translator, should have a meeting with Professor Fangna to help Chinese readers understand Fangna’s main points of view. At the time, Professor Wang Hui was visiting the East Asian Department of Columbia University for teaching and invited him to join the conversation. The dialogue was scheduled to take place on December 9 at the office of Professor Fangna, Columbia History Department. However, on that day, there was an extremely heavy snowstorm in the eastern United States and the expressway was closed. I was unable to travel to New York and Wang Hui’s return to Beijing was approaching. , It is impossible to postpone the dialogue, and we have temporarily decided to change the dialogue to a telephone conversation. Unfortunately, when Wang Hui arrived at Fontaine’s office, the telephone intercom system failed again. In this way, the three-person telephone conversation was changed to a rotary telephone interview between me and Fang and Wang Hui. The following is a Chinese translation of this English conversation recording. - Wang Xi
