In the elderly, increased vascular stiffness, decreased sensitivity of the cardiovascular system to [beta] -adrenoceptor and increased blood viscosity are a common cause of asymptomatic cardiovascular compromise. The decrease in mean arterial pressure and cardiac output at hypovolemia can affect microcirculation and the supply of oxygen, which in turn can compromise cardiovascular function. In order to assess the effects of regular blood supply on healthy elderly on cardiovascular system (including microcirculation) and its compensatory mechanism, 42 healthy elderly blood donors were observed and studied.
