The Caribbean-confluence fire-dependent pine forest covers a vast area that includes the Caribbean Sea and the coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Bahamian, Cuban, Hispaniola (ie, the island of Haiti) and Honduras . These forests have a high value of preservation and, unfortunately, are largely unprotected. In addition, the use of fire for forest management is often not understood by the general public even if the forest is fire-dependent and in some countries it is prohibited by law. In this paper, we describe the fundamental linkages between fires in these ecosystems and forest regeneration and forest sustainability. Based on whether pine seedlings can survive in response to a fire, we identified two general strategies and described the management implications of both strategies. We have also proposed a conceptual model that describes the relationship between fire, forest structure and reclamation strategies.
