16世纪到19世纪是大英帝国的殖民扩张时期。英国在北美大西洋沿岸相继建立了13块殖民地,在加勒比岛屿建立了百慕大、巴巴多斯、牙买加等殖民地,在印度和非洲许多地区也建立了殖民据点。英国除了占领殖民地的土地、财富和资源,并要求当地居民臣服于英国女王的统治之外,其殖民扩张还为英语这门语言带来了一些新的词汇。下面笔者就带大家看一看这些词。
The 16th and 19th centuries were the period of colonial expansion of the British Empire. Britain has successively established 13 colonies along the North American Atlantic coast.
