World sugar production in 1979/80 is estimated at 2,388,000 tonnes less than last year. Some major sugar-producing countries cut production, some deliberately cut production, some due to natural disasters. For example, India will cut 874,000 tons, Cuba will cut 768,000 tons, Brazil will cut 767,000 tons, Thailand will cut 462,000 tons and the Soviet Union will cut 400,000 tons. The cut in Cuba was caused by the rust of sugar cane. Cuban authorities do not usually announce estimates of production. According to intelligence, the authors estimate that the amount of sugar produced in Cuba in 1979/80 was 7.25 million tons, compared with 801.8 million tons in 1978/79. World sugar consumption in 1979/80 is estimated at 91.89 million
