编修地方志是我国的优秀文化传统。这个传统已历一二千年之久,是世界文化史上仅有的。地方志为什么能够长盛不衰?这有两方面的原因。一方面,中华民族有五千年的悠久的文化源流,有高度发育的共同的文化心理素质,在这样深厚的文化土壤上,才能够孕育出地方志这样的硕果,另一方面的原因是,地方志这种书的本身的价值。历代优秀的志家,莫不主张地方志要“经世致用。”统治者中的有识之士正是看到地方志对于他们十分有用,可以作为“资治之书”,于是予以重视和提倡,元、明、清代均由朝廷颁布诏令修志。修志的命令,有时甚至达到急如星火的程度。
