As Singapore’s human society moves toward the 21st century, more and more experts and scholars, government officials and business people are turning their attention to the two sides of the Pacific Ocean. They talked warmly about the 21st century as the “Pacific Century,” talking about the fact that the booming Pacific economy will become the locomotive of world economic development. However, at the recent 8th Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference held in Singapore, some quite reputable experts, scholars and politicians put forward different views. Remind people not to be intoxicated but to see the huge and serious challenges facing the Pacific to be prepared to meet those challenges. The theme of this meeting is “Global Challenges and Pacific Strategy.” Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong made a speech on this issue at the opening ceremony. he
