依据二茂铁在酸性溶剂中容易失去电子而成为三价二茂铁离子的性质,它应具有还原性质,可能作为某些有机化合物的还原剂。为此,我们对二茂铁的还原性质作了一系列的研究,发现二茂铁对苯醌和四氯苯醌等容易还原,得到相应的产物:对苯二酚和四氯对苯二酚,产率均在90%以上。用二茂铁作还原剂的方法比较简便,尤其是没有副反应发生。被氧化了的三价二茂铁离子,可以用抗坏血酸再还原成二茂铁而回收。用二茂铁作还原剂对醌类的反应如下:
