As the April flowers blossomed in the warmth of spring, Mrs. Miriam Ould Daddah, wife of the first president of Mauritania Moktar Ould Daddah, came to China with her son.
Before the 11th century BCE, Mauritania was the main caravan route between southern Morocco and the Niger River. From the 15th century, however, it was invaded successively by colonists from Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain and France. It became a French colony in 1912 and in November 1958, a French Community member state with the name of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. It gained independence on November 28, 1960. Moktar Ould Daddah served four presidential terms lasting 18 years. President and Mrs. Daddah visited China respectively in October 1967, September 1974 and April 1977, during which they were cordially received by Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai.
After the death of President Daddah in 2003, his widow set up the Moktar Ould Daddah Foundation to safeguard the legitimate rights of women and children, reducing the number of girls not attending school, providing vocational training for women, and organizing the production of educational radio and TV programs. She also founded the Mauritanian Red Crescent Society and serves as its President. Mrs. Daddah, French by origin, is now 79. She studied law and history in universities in France, Senegal and Tunisia. She met President Daddah at the law school of University of Paris, where he gained a bachelor’s degree in law. The marriage produced two sons and a daughter. Mohammedoun, the elder son who accompanied Mrs. Daddah on the visit, was born in 1966 and now serves as head of the International Department of Mauritania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During her visit in China this time, Mrs. Daddah called on the Soong Ching Ling Foundation where she learned of its international children’s summer camps held every July with activities in Beijing and Inner Mongolia. She hoped that Mauritanian children would have the opportunity to take part. She discussed with leading members of the Foundation issues such as the planning of activities for youth and children, the promotion of public welfare programs, and the improvement of subsistence conditions of women and children. She told them that the Moktar Ould Daddah Foundation received the support and protection from the people of all walks of life and the government of Mauritania.
It had been 35 years since her previous visit to China and she was very excited. She pledged to dedicate the remainder of her life to strengthening Mauritania-China relations so that the people of the two countries would live in friendship generation after generation.
