On March 28, 2006, France launched a nationwide strike and demonstrations. The fuse for the French general strike was that the government introduced the “first-time employment contract” bill and passed it in the National Assembly. This “First-time Employment Contract” Act provides that businesses of over 20 employees may be arbitrarily dismissed in the first two years after signing employment contracts with young people under the age of 26, without giving reasons.
