在养鱼地区,螺蛳壳是每年从鱼池中清理出来的废品。过去曾试用作为承重层和保护层材料,但因颗粒小,承重力不足,容易沉陷;用作松散保护层则容易被车轮辗压成粉末,使用周期太短,都没有成功。自1964年11月起,苏州工区先后在木东线9~27公里泥结碎砖路面上铺筑了18公里螺蛳壳的凝固磨耗层,压实厚度2~2.5厘米。铺筑至今,最长的已10个月,经每日平均行车密度40~50车次的实际使用考验,质量很好。螺蛳壳磨耗层主要优点是:(1)就地取材,是无砂石河网地区解决养路材料的好办法,养路成本低;(2)螺蛳壳水稳定性强,完整的螺蛳壳经压实后嵌合
