M.D.Tokach of Kansas State University pointed out that valine may be a limiting amino acid in feed for high-protein lactation sows, and valine deficiency will limit the use of synthetic lysine. B.J. Kerr, a pig nutritionist, found that valine is the fourth limiting amino acid in growing pigs. The United States NRC recommends that at least 0 to 5 kg of young pig feed should contain at least 0.8% valine, and valine should be reduced to about 0.4% for 50 to 110 kg fattening pigs. The valine recommendations for pregnant and lactating sows were 0.32% and 0.60%, respectively.
