隔着太平洋遥相望的中国和美国,有着怎样的差异?Karen刚一踏上美利坚的国土,就被时差弄昏了头脑。在美国的第一周,Karen有着怎样的故事要与我们分享呢?美国的公共交通设施与中国有何区别呢?野生动物是怎样与人类共存的呢?
It is exactly a year after my victorious landing in the United States. I say a victorious landing because the trip between China and the U.S. was unbearably long. I had never taken a twenty-hour flight before I came to America. I had a couple of layovers for several hours during the trip. So by the time I reached my destination, I figured I had spent about a day on the journey.
I could not sleep in the airport for fear I would miss my transit flight. The nonstop hum of the engine and the continuous in-flight service also forbade me from sleeping on the plane. I bet I must have looked like a zombie after I arrived. My mind was confused about day and night. I was bug-eyed at four o’clock in the morning and pooped out at five o’clock in the afternoon. My friend told me this was JET LAG.
A couple of things about America that I noticed in my first week were:
One, the road condition is fabulous. Roads are well-paved and well-marked. The interstate highways enable Americans to travel on four-wheels from state to state.
Two, green space is much larger than in China. People who live in single-family houses have big lawns both in the front and the back of their house. On both sides of the expressways or country roads are usually bushes and farmland. Even in cities, among apartment buildings and business skyscrapers, you can easily find grassland, gardens, or public parks.
So wild animals like squirrels, chipmunks, deer, geese, raccoons, rabbits, and many others, coexist with humans. I was surprised to see them during my stay in the northeastern United States. And because the roads are good, cars run super fast. There is a term—road kill—to describe those animals that are killed by vehicles on the road.
I saw too many things in my first week to write about them all this time. But I still remember I felt strongly as soon as I arrived in America that I must learn how to drive a vehicle. Public transportation in America is not as good as in China. So I hope you enjoy the advantage of taking buses to school or work.
