髡残(1612～1673),俗姓刘,湖广武林(今湖南常德)人。自幼聪明好学,习举子业。20岁时出家,投本乡龙山三家庵为僧。取僧名石貉,字介丘,号髡残,又号白秃、电住道人、残道者、(古“天”字)壤残道者等。关于他出家为僧的原因,文学记载不一,程正揆《青溪遗稿》说:“髡残幼有夙根,具奇慧,不读非道之书,不近女色,父母强婚不从,乃弃举子业,廿岁削发为僧”。周亮工《读画录·画史丛刊》本卷二说:
