明朝统治者继承了自秦汉以来就形成的中央大一统思想,奉行“守中治边”的政策,纵观明朝历史,与蒙古之间的相互拉锯贯穿了整个明朝的历史,一度成为统治者颇为头痛的问题,进而明朝的历代统治者都极为重视处理与蒙古的关系,探索出一系列的政策改善同蒙古的关系,促进明朝与蒙古的和睦发展。
