本世纪初叶,知道而且会唱《国际歌》的人在我国是很少的。那时,这首革命歌曲,还没有中文译词。如何尽快把《国际歌》歌词准确翻译出来,介绍、推广到中国人民中去,成了无产阶级革命家、文学家和翻译家翟秋白当时在心头萦回不已的重大事情。1921年7月中国共产党成立后,他更感迫切。经过反复考虑研究和推敲,从试译到定稿,他费了许多心血,才在1923年6月中旬出版的《新青年》季刊第一期上,正式刊发,公之于众。
