中国的造园艺术与中国的文学和绘画艺术具有深远的历史渊源,特别受到文人写意山水画的影响。苏州园林以小巧、自由、精致、淡雅、写意见长,注意文化和艺术的和谐统一,因而发展到晚期的皇家园林,在意境、创作思想、建筑技巧、人文内容上,也大量地汲取了私家花园的“写意”手法。这种造园艺术与当时文人们所处的时代背景有着极其密切的关系。
