桐柏刘山岩铜锌矿床的主要含矿围岩历来定为石英角斑岩。经工作具以下特征:与上下去石(层)为整合接触;岩石具晶屑结构,片理构造,晶屑具坠裂构造,主要组成矿物长石、石英、绢云母含量变化幅度大,SiO_2比正常的石英角斑岩明显偏高;而Al_2O_3CaO偏低;矿体与围岩同步褶皱,矿石与围岩呈过渡关系,矿石为浸染状。上述种种特征显示具火山碎屑沉积成因。主要矿物石英糜棱化,并重结晶形成长条体,其中的黄铜矿为碎裂或碎斑状,是为后期动力变质作用所致。另外,细碧角斑岩系中矿床围岩通常为石英角斑凝灰岩。鉴于以上特征:桐柏刘山岩铜锌矿床的主要含矿围岩应为变石英角斑凝厌岩较为确切。
