Saudi Arabia plans to spend 420 million US dollars joint venture with Japan to establish a sponge titanium plant. The new sponge titanium plant will join the already overcapacity industrial titanium market. This may also provide a reference to the future location of Japanese sponge titanium producers. Japan Toho Titanium Co. Ltd. has signed an agreement with two Saudi companies, Tasnee and Cristal, to set up a titanium sponge plant in Yanbu Industrial City . Insiders say the joint venture is the first sponge titanium plant in the Middle East with an estimated annual capacity of 15,600 tonnes (34.4 million pounds). Toho said the construction project is expected to start in January 2015 and be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016. The factory’s products will first meet the industrial needs of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
