二十世纪的第二个十年,不到三十岁的熊彼特就成为格拉兹大学的教授,也是整个奥匈帝国最年轻的教授。尽管教学任务十分繁重,可他做起来一丝不苟。有一次一个学生打算从学校阅览室借阅一本印数很少的书, 管理员死活不让他借走。一贯绅士做派的熊彼特勃然大怒,带着学生冲到图书馆。和管理员两人话不投机,熊彼特提出以男人间的决斗来了结这场纷争。最后以熊彼特胜出,管理员受伤。为了学生借书而与别人决斗,这在教育史上都是极为罕见的。
