The measuring principle, measuring device and measuring result of measuring mode field diameter of single-mode fiber by transverse shift method are discussed. This method is one of the recommended mode-measuring single mode fiber mode-field diameter by CCITT. This set of measuring device has the advantages of accurate displacement measurement, high system stability and high degree of automation. A comparison of the measurements made with a series of optical fiber samples with the continuous variable aperture method (far-field method) shows that both are within 3%
