Magnetron cathodes are required to produce large current densities during long pulses, which are currently met with porous tungsten-based metal cathodes. The fact indicates that the dipole cathode has a reduced secondary emission coefficient during the first few hours of life and that this reduction sometimes poses some problems for magnetron operation. This article describes the effect of magnetron operation on the secondary emission of these cathodes in several different gas atmospheres. In addition, data on the residual gas present in small X-band magnetrons are also given. These results show that carbon monoxide decomposition causes cathodic poisoning.
