PURPOSE: To verify the hypothesis that telomere length in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) is shorter than those of healthy controls matched to their age and gender. Background: Telomere length is considered as a marker of biological aging. CHF can be considered as a condition associated with accelerated aging. Methods: In a case-control study involving 803 subjects, the leukocyte telomere length ratio was prospectively determined by quantitative PCR. Subjects included 183 healthy subjects and 620 CHF patients aged 40 to 80 years, NYH Class A cardiac function class II to IV, and left ventricular ejection fraction 40%. Results: The median length to telomere length of CHF patients was 0.64 (IQR 0.47 to 0.88)
