在医院里治病,突然得到茅盾同志与世长辞的消息,心情特别沉重。“五四”新文学运动的重大意义,不限于文学艺术,还在于它反映了一整个时代的历史变革,可以方之为现代中国的“文艺复兴”。作为新文学运动开山的代表人物,不少是思想卓越、华采烂缦、胸襟辽廓、学养精深的巨人,茅盾同志是其中名列前茅的一位。早在四十余年前,文学界就呼之为茅公而不名。这种近而不卑的称号,表达了大家对这位剪辈亲切尊敬的感情。老成雕谢,我们又经历了一次无可奈何的悲痛。
