长江澄通河段天生港水道位于如皋沙群北侧,上接如皋河段中汊(中汊上接福姜沙北水道),下通通洲沙东水道,长二十五公里,是澄通河段内主要支汊。目前该水道紧靠北岸,远离主流,落潮时由中汊分来的流量甚微,河床宽浅,日益萎缩。而该水道是南通市如皋、海安、如东、南通四县农田24.2万余公顷的引水灌溉、2138平方公里排涝以及补给城乡工业和内河航运用水的唯一港道。沿江北岸建有大小涵闸21座,净孔宽327.39米,其中沿江圩区涵闸孔宽61.36米,灌溉农田
