尽管吴京安凭借话剧《甘巴拉》和话剧《湘江、湘江》一举摘得中国话剧、戏剧最高奖的金狮奖和梅花奖,但吴京安所主演的话剧影响最大的却是获得第七届戏剧节优秀表演奖的《霸王别姬》。话剧《霸王别姬》是著名作家莫言的大手笔。之前,张艺谋曾经请莫言写一个楚汉题材的作品《英雄·美人·骏马》,后来没有投拍,但莫言因此对楚汉那段历史有了比较深的了解。吴京安在剧中主演悲剧英雄项羽。“我演的项羽根本不是以前人们所看到的‘力拔山兮气盖世’的项羽,而是缠绵于两个女人之间的项羽,是一个柔情似水的项羽。我觉得他依然是个英雄,他非常可爱,他是这样一个人:哪怕为爱情多活一天,也不愿意为王权折磨一生。”2001年,话剧《霸王别姬》在首都剧场首演,引起了轰动也引起了争议。接着,该剧走出国门,在国外已连演了三年,风靡亚非欧三大洲。
