亚瑟·韦利(Arthur Waley)是二十世纪英国最重要的汉学家之一,他的翻译为中国文学作品外传作出了巨大的贡献。韦利一生中只翻译过一部长篇中国小说,即《西游记》,译作名为《猴》(Monkey)。该文以操纵理论为理论基础,以韦利的译作《猴》为研究对象,分析孙悟空这个人物在翻译过程中如何被重新塑造。
Arthur Waley was one of the most important Sinologists in Britain in the twentieth century. His translation contributed tremendously to the rumored transmission of Chinese literary works. Wei Li translated only a lengthy Chinese novel in his life, that is, “Journey to the West”, translated as “Monkey” (Monkey). Based on the theory of manipulation, this article takes Willie’s translation of “Monkey” as the object of study, and analyzes how this figure in Sun Wukong is reshaped in the process of translation.
